With his nonchalant dapperness and brooding brow, Terence Stamp was the epitome of the 1960s. A Hollywood icon hailing from the East End, he exemplified a style that transcended class. He was voted New Star of the Year at the 1963 Golden Globes, and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his starring role in Peter Ustinov’s Billy Budd. He went steady with Julie Christie, Brigitte Bardot and Jean Shrimpton, shared a bachelor pad with fellow skirt-chaser and snappy dresser, Michael Caine – but at the turn of the decade, Stamp’s fame and career took a significant nosedive.
